Wegovy

Wegovy is an MHRA licensed weight management treatment for adults in the UK. It contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic (semaglutide), made by the same manufacturer Novo Nordisk, but at higher doses and licensed specifically for weight loss rather than type 2 diabetes. In clinical trials, patients on the maintenance dose lost an average of around 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks alongside a reduced calorie diet and more physical activity.

Is Wegovy right for you?
Wegovy is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above if you also have a weight related condition such as type 2 diabetes, raised blood pressure, high cholesterol, or obstructive sleep apnoea. It works alongside lifestyle changes rather than instead of them, so you'll need to commit to a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity to get the best from it. Our clinicians check your eligibility as part of your consultation.

How it works
Semaglutide is a GLP‑1 receptor agonist, which is a long way of saying it mimics one of the natural gut hormones your body releases after eating. By activating the GLP‑1 receptor, it reduces your appetite, slows how quickly your stomach empties, and helps you feel full sooner and for longer. The result is fewer cravings and smaller portions feeling enough, which makes the lifestyle side of weight loss much more manageable.

What the clinical evidence shows
Wegovy has been studied extensively through the STEP trial programme. Patients on the 2.4mg maintenance dose lost an average of around 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks. More than eight in ten participants lost at least 5% of their starting weight, and many also saw improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar control. In a separate study of patients with type 2 diabetes, average weight loss was around 10% over the same period.

Your treatment with Rightangled
We're a regulated UK pharmacy and prescribing service, which means every Wegovy prescription is reviewed by one of our GMC registered clinicians, not by an algorithm. Most assessments are reviewed the same day. Your medication is dispensed from our GPhC registered pharmacy and arrives in discreet, temperature controlled packaging. Our clinical team is available throughout your treatment if anything comes up.

What's in the box
Wegovy comes as a pre filled FlexTouch pen containing four weekly doses, so one pen covers a month of treatment. The injection needles, the official patient information leaflet, and access to our clinical support team are all included.

Your dosing schedule
You'll start on a low dose so your body has time to adjust, and the dose increases gradually over the first 16 weeks. The standard schedule is 0.25mg once a week for the first four weeks, then 0.5mg, then 1mg, then 1.7mg, and finally 2.4mg as your ongoing maintenance dose from week 17 onwards. Each step lasts around four weeks. Your clinician may slow this down if you're struggling with side effects, or keep you on a lower dose if it's working well for you.

What to expect from side effects
The most common side effects are digestive: nausea, mild diarrhoea, constipation, and occasional vomiting. They're usually mild, tend to settle within a few weeks, and are most noticeable just after a dose increase. Eating smaller meals more often, easing off rich and fatty foods, and staying well hydrated makes a real difference for most patients.

When Wegovy isn't suitable
Wegovy isn't right for everyone. You shouldn't take it if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy in the next two months, or if you've had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide. It also isn't suitable if you have severe gastrointestinal disease, a history of pancreatitis, or if you're already on a similar medication such as Ozempic, Saxenda, or another GLP‑1. Our clinicians review your full medical history during your consultation to make sure it's safe for you.

Getting started
Start with our short online consultation. It takes around five minutes and asks about your health, medical history, and weight loss goals. One of our clinicians reviews your answers, usually within hours, and if Wegovy is suitable for you we'll dispense your prescription and send it out from our UK pharmacy with next day delivery available.

Wegovy or Mounjaro?
Both are excellent once weekly injections, but they aren't quite the same medication. Wegovy contains semaglutide and works on GLP‑1 alone, with an average weight loss of around 15% in trials. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and works on two hormones (GLP‑1 and GIP), with an average weight loss of 22.5%. Wegovy starts from £99.99 a month and Mounjaro from £164.99. Your clinician will help you decide which is the better fit for your goals, medical history, and budget.

Wegovy is a prescription only medicine regulated by the MHRA and must be prescribed after a proper medical assessment. For full prescribing information, please refer to the Summary of Product Characteristics on medicines.org.uk.
